Making an old map

Making an old map

Here's an easy way of creating an old, burnt treasure map in photoshop.

Old map tutorial

First of all we have to open a new document. Make it quite big. In this example I used 800x800. Press D on the keyboard to make sure the color palette is at its black and white default, then go Filter->Render->Clouds.

That done we add an Emboss filter from the filter->Stylize drop down menu.

And to add color go Image->Adjustments->Hue and Saturation:

Now we have to make an old, battered and burnt map shape. The easiest way to do this is to press Q on the keyboard to activate the quick mask. Then just select the paintbrush tool and paint:

We finished, press Q again to get the selection. Go Select->Inverse.

Press Delete on the keyboard and you should get something like this:

Now for the map. Start up google and do an image search. A simple black and white type map is the best here, but make sure it is quite big. This one I found is from Stargate.

Once the map is open in photoshop, press the move tool and drag it onto our parchment:

Make sure the map layer is selected and press Crtl+T on the keyboard to activate the transform. Then adjust the map to fit over the parchment layer:

Change the map layer to Color burn blending and prepare to be amazed!

Now we need to zoom in on the map layer and start deleting the map where it goes off the parchment. Don't forget to erase all the white and not just the text:

Almost finished:

The only thing left to do is use the Burn Tool (O on the keyboard). Go over all the edges but remember that the more you do it the darker it will be:
